Morey began his career as a Principal Consultant at EY-Parthenon, a renowned strategy consulting firm. He rose to prominence after serving for three years as the Senior Vice President of Operations for the Boston Celtics. In April 2006, Leslie Alexander appointed Morey as the Co-General Manager of the Houston Rockets.

In the autumn of 2012, he and the Rockets executed a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder to acquire James Harden, an All-Star at the time and the eventual 2017–18 League MVP.
